A while ago The Guardian reported the findings of a survey of passwords by the tech company, NordPass. The results explain why hacking is so widespread and apparently lucrative.
According to NordPass, “ . . . about 80 percent of data breaches are caused by compromised, weak, and reused passwords.” So, what are these weak and popular passwords they found in widespread use in the countries they surveyed including the UK. the USA, Australia, and Germany? Well, they’re almost too ridiculous to believe in this day and age when we’ve been repeatedly warned about the proper use of passwords. Incredibly, the most popular is “admin” in various configurations. The second most popular is “123456.” In the top 20 passwords, variations of “password” takes up 5 spots and simple numeric combinations such as “12345678” and “123456789” take up another 5 spots!
What a lot of people don’t seem to understand is that it only takes criminals seconds to figure out simple passwords such as the foregoing examples; even more difficult passwords aren’t an obstacle since they’re armed with sophisticated software nowadays.
So, what to do? Fortunately, there are relatively easy solutions. For example: use long passwords of at least eight characters that mix up random digits, letters, and special characters; don’t repeat passwords for different accounts; and use two-factor (2FA) authentication.
Finally, if you’re concerned about forgetting all your different passwords, use a password storage service like Google Password Manager or iCloud Keychain rather than recording them where they can easily be found.
